We have had extensive experience writing business plans, both for start up companies and for divisions inside existing companies. Several of these business plans were written as part of entrepreneurial work, others as work for client organizations. Some examples to illustrate our experience are below:

Internet company business plan
Barry co-authored the business plan for Sprockets.com, Inc., a venture-backed startup company that he co-founded in 1998. The Sprockets business plan defined a new business service – an internet-based collaborative platform that enabled marketing professionals to collaborate and share their large production files with their creative and production partners. This plan was used to raise over $8 million in a Series A round and more than $4 million in a Series B round.

Software company business plan
Barry served as the VP of strategy and marketing for EasyAsk, Inc., a site-search software company that was primarily focused on providing search capabilities that enabled customers to find products on the websites of e-commerce retail companies like Lands’ End, Talbots and Coach. During his time there, he wrote the business plan for raising one of the follow-on venture capital rounds for the company.

Mail-order pharmacy business plan
When Barry served as VP of strategy and marketing at ShopKo Stores in Wisconsin during the early 1990’s, he conceived of the idea for adding a mail order pharmacy service to supplement the retail pharmacy business that was part of the chain. This idea was based on the emerging influence of third-party insurance plans in the payment of prescription drugs, and the resulting concentration of retail pharmacy competitors in response to that trend. The plan Barry wrote was internally funded by the company, and launched near the company’s headquarters. Subsequently, this new division was expanded to incorporate prescription benefit management services, and ultimately was spun off and sold to Medco.

Software company business plan
We worked with a software company focused on a form of business intelligence software that was struggling with a slow down in sales. We used the business planning process for several purposes – strategic planning and seeking additional capital.

Our assessment of the challenge was that the company had insufficient resources dedicated to sales and marketing. More importantly, though, was the fact that the limited resources were being stretched with new product efforts, while the core product, which had several large and happy customers, was not getting sufficient attention. The business plan became the vehicle for focusing all efforts on sales and marketing of the core product, and on seeking additional capital to support the necessary sales and marketing resources to realize the potential.

Medical Device company business plan
We worked with a medical device company to revise and focus its business plan so that it would be more effective in raising capital. During the process, we used the process to get the founder and his team more focused on the business aspects of his growth plans in addition to the scientific aspects. This plan has resulted in a successful initial round of angel capital and is being used to guide the growth of the company.
