Barry Horwitz brings a rare combination of strategy expertise gained at a top strategy consulting firm and operating experience gained at start-ups and established companies to his work at Horwitz & Company LLC. His work is focused on helping senior management with growth initiatives; developing or refining strategic plans, business plans and implementation plans. He has primarily worked with companies in retail and consumer products, Internet and software technology and telecommunications.
Barry’s consulting experience includes several years with The Boston Consulting Group as a management consultant and case leader, focusing on corporate strategy development for Fortune 500 clients. His consulting work has focused on strategy and marketing issues, working with senior management of companies ranging from early-stage and middle-market companies to global enterprises. He has also brought a business focus to non-profit organizations of both local and national scope
Barry’s experience with early-stage companies includes his role as co-founder and COO of Sprockets.com, Inc., where he raised over $12 million in venture capital funding to launch the company. Sprockets targeted advertising and marketing professionals with a collaboration platform service. He also served as VP of Marketing and Strategy for EasyAsk, Inc, (acquired by Progress in 2005) a site search software company whose customer list includes companies like Lands’ End, Coach and Talbots
Barry has also held senior management positions in Marketing and Strategic Planning at two multi-billion dollar discount department store chains. For one of them, ShopKo Stores, he developed the strategy to help the chain weather the entry of Wal-Mart into their markets. While at ShopKo, he also initiated the launch of a successful mail-order pharmacy division that was subsequently sold to Medco. In a more operational role, Barry led the formation and growth of an in-store bakery division from pilot to $17 million for a New England regional supermarket chain.
Barry has been active in pro-bono consulting to Boston area non-profits through his work on the Board of Harvard Business School Association’s Community Action Partners (www.cap-hbsab.org) for over ten years; he served as co-chair of the organization for 2003-2006. He is also an adjunct professor at the Boston University Graduate School of Management, where he teaches Strategy and Entrepreneurship.
He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his BA degree in Economics from Colby College, both with honors.
